They say ignorance is bliss. I don’t particularly agree. Not when it comes to your dog’s health!

Most dog owners don’t have the slightest idea what the dog food contains. They just take the bait from the commercials and throw their money on all kinds of brands. In the end, the pet food industry earns billions and the dog owners get only ill or even dead dogs.

Dog Food SecretsDo you really know what your dog is eating? Do you want to know?

Pet food companies turn the meat that’s not fit for human consumption into pet food. This includes animals with cancer and other diseases, dead animals and parts of their bodies like fur, intestines, lungs, bones, blood, eyelashes and nails. All these are rendered and turned into food for pets. This is what your dog eats! Yummy, isn’t it?

Rendered means removing the water and killing the germs but it also means destroying the natural nutrients of the raw meat. But keep in mind that rendering doesn’t necessarily destroy the hormones used to fatten the livestock or the drugs used to euthanize the animals.

Besides this, pet food companies use many other dangerous ingredients like preservatives (most of them banned in many countries because of their harmful effects), solvents, synthetic vitamins (very dangerous for the liver) and artificial coloring.

The amount of certain ingredients is as doubtful as their quality. For instance, if the dog food contains meat (chicken, beef etc.) and corn, you can be pretty sure that there is more corn than meat in that food. And dogs just don’t need corn. Grains are the source of the many allergies dogs have and all they do is to fill the stomach and then get pooped out!

Commercial Dog Food Brands

No Name. You can find them anywhere and they are probably the worst food you can feed your dog. The meat, if any, is selected from the dead, dying, diseased or decaying and completed by a lot of grains. So much for meeting the nutritional requirements!

Premium Dog Food. Usually you can find it in pet stores. The quality of the meat is superior and the quantity larger. Also, it contains more usable fats. However, is full of preservatives and other harmful elements.

Holistic Dog Food. Holistic means you can eat it! Kidding! Holistic means the ingredients can be used to prepare human food too. The food contains human-grade meats and digestible fats. Your dog doesn’t have to eat an entire bag to meet his daily nutritional requirements. They are a little bit more expensive and hard to find.

If you’re feeding your dog commercial food just read the label and make sure the meat origin is specified. Like in “chicken meat, duck, beef”, etc., not like “animal protein” (which usually means that the meat might come even from other dogs or from the unusable parts of the animals).

I stopped feeding my dog kibble and canned food a long time ago. The grains in it were causing him allergies and stress for his kidneys. I chose a raw dog food diet, mixed with some homemade recipes. He is much healthier, more active and definitely happier. I can see it in his tail right before I feed him!
